Specialty Foods Buyer

Department: PURCHASING
Location: New Bedford, MA

The Food Buyer initiates and expands supplier relationships. The Specialty Food Buyer is responsible for purchasing specialty products from suppliers. This person will negotiate competitive pricing of goods and develop and maintain positive relationships with growers, shippers and other vendors. This candidate should exhibit strong negotiation and critical thinking skills. The right candidates will be flexible, action and results oriented, self-starting, and have strong analytical skills.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Reviewing product sales forecasts a based on seasonality, market trends, and probability of anticipated sales
  • Maintaining adequate supplies of inventory to meet customer service level expectations while minimizing inventory loss. Keeping excessive inventory to a minimum.
  • Expediting delivery of products by communicating with other buyers, vendors and sales department.
  • Verifying vendor invoice reconciliations and resolving challenges with delivery receipt, supply, invoicing, rejections, etc.
  • Working with multiple departments and positions including Warehouse Operations, Dispatch, Receiving Department, Accounting and Marketing. 
  • Assisting sales force with questions concerning product specifications and additions/deletions to inventory product lines. 

Required, Education and Experience:

  • 4-year degree in Business or related field preferred.


  • 1+ year(s) of food buying experience.
  • 5+ years of relevant industry experience.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.

Physical Requirements:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Language Skills: 
Ability to read, write and speak fluently in English. Bilingual English/Spanish is preferred.

Reasoning Ability:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.

Work Environment
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
The employee must work 45 to 50 hours per week. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.

Limited travel is expected for this position.
