Customer Service Representative

Location: New Bedford, MA

Sid Wainer & Son, based in New Bedford, MA, has been the most prominent importer and distributor of specialty produce in the country since 1914.  In addition to produce, Sid Wainer & Son offers artisanal cheese and specialty foods, including their exclusive Jansal Valley® line.  Sid Wainer & Son supplies over 25,000 of the finest restaurants, hotels, gourmet shops, retailers, and caterers both domestically and internationally.  

The Customer Service Representative is responsible for providing effective customer service for all internal and external customers by using excellent, in-depth knowledge of company products and programs as well as communicating effectively with team members within the customer service department.

Essential Functions

  • Process incoming sales orders into AS400, and follow up with managers/merchandisers/brokers and/or customers on pending issues.
  • Collaborate with marketing, purchasing, outside sales and other internal departments to facilitate new programs, messages, campaigns, and offerings.
  • Ensure reporting and communications is frequent and bi-directional.
  • Generate and qualify leads through cold calling.
  • Close sales and meet monthly sales goals in accordance with development plan.
  • Attend tradeshows and conferences; work with affiliate sales to cross-generate leads.
  • Remains knowledgeable and up-to-date on changes and developments of products offered.
  • Process and maintain all new customer set ups, item forms, deal sheets, and trade spending activity working cross functionally with Finance Department to manage customer account (bill backs, scans, chargebacks, etc).
  • Conduct telemarketing calls within territory to meet goals established by Sales Support Manager (i.e. upsell opportunity based on the selling season, introduction of new products or promotional opportunities, etc.)
  • Process sales leads into data base from trade shows, prospecting or catalog requests in order to convert those leads into new accounts.
  • Proactively manage customer complaints and provide solutions to problems, (i.e. incorrect items received, damaged shipment shipping costs, shelf life, etc.

Food Safety Responsibilities

  •  Works with Quality Assurance Team to ensure specific Good Manufacturing Practices are being followed. 
  •  Employee shall adhere to all company food safety policies, procedures, and trainings.

Required, Education and Experience

  • High School Diplomaor GED required.
  • Associates degree in business or culinary arts preferred.


  • 2+ years of customer service experience
  • 2+ years of culinary experience (or 2 years' experience working in CS/Sales for a food distributor)
  • Proficient in MS Office & Outlook

Language Skills: Ability to read, write and speak fluently in English

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
The employee must work 40 hours per week. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
